The Essential Guide to Better Sleep

We all know when we have a good nights sleep we awake refreshed and ready to face the day ahead.  We need sleep to restore and rejuvenate our body and brain, but with our 24 hour society, shift work and stresses of work and family life we are not always able to get the amount of sleep we need.  So it is more important than ever to make the most of the sleep we do get. 

• From the research we know that it is better if you go to sleep in a really dark room,.This encourages the production of melatonin which is the hormone that helps you to sleep. In fact, during the evening, if you can turn the lights down then this will start the production of melatonin which will help you sleep. 
• Your room should be comfortable -  not too hot or too cold.
• Try to avoid coffee, alcohol or a heavy meal too close to bedtime 
• Try not to be disturbed, not easy if you have a young family but,if the cat needs to go out, put it out before you go to bed.
• The theory is that you should not read anything that is too exciting or stimulating, some doctors recommend Mills and Boon, but that might not be to everyone’s taste!

So how much sleep is enough?

As we grow older we generally need less sleep.  New babies need about 17 hours a day to help growth, children about 9-10 hours and most adults between 7 and 8 hours.  These are the generally accepted ‘normal’ amounts of sleep required.
